Lucas Millard and Kate Stryker have been creating documentary, fictional, and animated content together since 2009. In the winter of 2012-2013 they traveled to Nepal to co-teach a stop-motion animation workshop at Sattya Media Arts Collective in Kathmandu. During their time in Nepal, they ventured out into the hills of eastern Nepal, to a region in which Lucas had conducted field research as an undergraduate student in 1996-97. It is an area where social, economic, and environmental conditions are changing markedly, and these changes inspired 'Baato.' Lucas was awarded a 2014-15 Fulbright grant, thus paving the way for Lucas and Kate to return to Nepal
and begin production.
